Thomas Armstrong Construction is proud to announce its appointment as the principal contractor for the significant £2 million refurbishment project to relocate HM Coroner's Service for Cumbria. This crucial undertaking will see the service move from its current Cockermouth base to modern, fit-for-purpose facilities within Allerdale House in Workington.
Commencing on Monday, June 30th, 2025, the project is scheduled for completion in November of this year. Thomas Armstrong will be responsible for extensive internal alterations and refurbishment to a dedicated section of Allerdale House, transforming it into a state-of-the-art judicial facility.
The existing premises in Cockermouth no longer meet the evolving needs of the Coroner's Service or its users. Limitations included the court's capacity to host larger inquests, including those requiring a jury, compromised security, accessibility challenges, and issues inherent in an ageing building.
The new Workington facility, a project backed by a £2 million investment from Cumberland Council, will address these critical shortcomings. Plans include the creation of a large main courtroom with dedicated jury facilities, a secondary court, three private family/meeting rooms, a welcoming waiting area, and a reception. Modern offices and improved welfare facilities for HM Coroner and their support team will also be established across the ground and first floors. Furthermore, the accommodation will benefit from new service-specific audio-visual and ICT systems, ensuring the site meets national standards for a branch of the judiciary.
The repurposing of Allerdale House will create standalone accommodation with its own dedicated entrance and judicial branding, seamlessly integrating within the existing building while providing a distinct and appropriate space for the Coroner's Service.
This project further solidifies Thomas Armstrong Construction's commitment to contributing to the development and improvement of essential public services across Cumbria. We look forward to a successful collaboration with Cumberland Council and Align Property Partners to deliver this significant asset to the community.
