Bridge Replacement Following Storm Desmond Damage

Thomas Armstrong (Construction) Ltd was appointed by Cumbria County Council to replace the Old Gowan Bridge in Staveley, which was destroyed during Storm Desmond. The project involved constructing a new single-span bridge structure to reinstate the connection between the village and the Kentmere area.

The new bridge was built to modern standards while being sympathetic to the local environment and heritage. Works included reinforced concrete abutments, masonry cladding, and a precast concrete deck. Access roads and drainage improvements were completed as part of the contract. Careful environmental management was required due to proximity to the river and surrounding landscape.
