Broughton Bridge, Skipton

Heritage Bridge Reconstruction Following Flood Damage
Thomas Armstrong (Construction) Ltd was appointed to undertake the complex rebuild of Broughton Bridge near Skipton, following significant flood damage. The scheme involved a mix of temporary structural support, heritage restoration and permanent reinstatement — all completed under close supervision from English Heritage and the Environment Agency.
The works began with the installation of a designed scaffold arch support to prevent collapse during excavation. A new concrete saddle was installed within the bridge barrel, and the approach retaining walls, parapets and buttresses were rebuilt from new foundations upwards.
The project required specialist stone masonry teams to reinstate over 900m² of walling and to refurbish key historic elements including cast iron clamps and keystones. Close public liaison and environmental controls were essential throughout due to the location beside a main river and a live public setting.
