Riverbank stabilisation works and retaining wall repairs
This civil engineering scheme was carried out to repair a collapsed retaining wall along a section of the A6 between Shap and Kendal, involving 140 metres of riverbank protection. Due to the site’s location within a SSSI and flood-sensitive area, works had to be carried out under a tight window between June and September with appropriate consents.
To address the wall failure caused by underscour, grout bags were installed beneath the riverbed and sheet piles driven in as backup protection. Environmental considerations were prioritised throughout, including the installation of a cofferdam to contain grout and extensive coordination with Natural England and the Environment Agency. Willow spiling and flood-tolerant native planting were introduced along the embankment to promote long-term stability and biodiversity.
