Riverbank Retaining Wall Installation Following Storm Desmond
Following significant flood damage caused by Storm Desmond, Thomas Armstrong (Construction) Ltd was commissioned by insurance companies to construct a 3m high in-situ reinforced concrete retaining wall at Lydia’s Cottages, Keswick.
The 10-week project required an Environmental Agency permit for in-river works, which included strict pollution control measures and careful environmental management. The restricted site access led to the creation of a temporary haul road within the river bed, and a sandbag cofferdam was installed to establish a dry working area.
Dredging of the riverbed was also undertaken as part of the overall flood defence and stabilisation efforts. Despite site constraints, the works were delivered successfully within the required river working window.
