Signalised Crossing and Speed Table Works in Central Carlisle

Thomas Armstrong (Construction) Ltd delivered highway safety improvements for Carlisle City Council, including a new traffic-signal-controlled pedestrian crossing and raised speed tables along Castleway — a dual carriageway located in a conservation area of central Carlisle.

Due to limited alternative routes, careful planning and stakeholder engagement were critical to coordinating road closures and traffic management. Works included night shifts to minimise disruption, and hand-digging around sensitive utilities to install new ducting for traffic lights and services. Specialist paving and surfacing were laid with high-strength mortars, preserving the heritage aesthetic.

The contract was completed on time and within budget with zero incidents or disruption to local businesses.
