Hadrian’s Cycleway, Maryport to Allonby

Environmentally Sensitive Cycleway Scheme in West Cumbria
Thomas Armstrong (Construction) Ltd delivered a 4.9km stretch of Hadrian’s Cycleway between Maryport Golf Course and Allonby, working through an environmentally sensitive area of outstanding natural beauty.
The route passed alongside historically significant assets including a Roman Milefortlet and Elizabethan saltpans. As such, works were undertaken under continuous archaeological watching brief. Environmental considerations were also paramount, with protection measures in place for local flora and fauna — including Natterjack toads and other reptile species — in coordination with Natural England.
Two timber bridges were constructed over separate watercourses, subject to strict Flood Defence Consent regulations from the Environment Agency. A section of the route required specialist ground consolidation using a non-hazardous chemical to stabilise poor soils before finishing with gravel.
